DIABLo.

Make the vehicle unable to drive before you work around it.

DIABLo is a passive, non-powered device that uses the vehicle’s existing charge-port logic to request a non-drive state. Vehicle response is manufacturer and software dependent.

!

Verify — never assume

DIABLo is an additional control measure. It does not replace scene assessment, vehicle stabilisation, isolation procedures, wheel chocks or your service’s approved safe system of work.

01

What DIABLo does

When inserted into a compatible charge port, DIABLo simulates plug presence. A compatible vehicle should inhibit drive selection; some vehicles may also apply the electronic parking brake. On some hybrid vehicles, it may also stop the petrol engine from running.

02

Check the result

Where safe and possible, confirm the display shows P or N rather than D or R. Independently assess whether the vehicle is stable. Never infer brake application from sound alone.

OPERATING SEQUENCE

How to use DIABLo

For trained and authorised fire, police and ambulance personnel.

  1. 01Remove DIABLo from its protective bag and remove the end cap. Select the connector that matches the vehicle; most UK and European vehicles use Type 2.
  2. 02Locate and open the vehicle charge port. Use approved rescue information where the location is unclear. Do not create an additional electrical or mechanical hazard while gaining access.
  3. 03Insert the appropriate DIABLo connector fully into the charge port.
  4. 04Observe the vehicle. You may hear the electronic parking brake operate, but sound is not proof that the vehicle is secured.
  5. 05Where safe and possible, check that the display indicates P or N rather than D or R. If the display is off, assess the vehicle state using your service’s procedure.
  6. 06Stabilise and isolate the vehicle in accordance with your approved safe system of work. Treat DIABLo as one layer of control, not the sole means of restraint.
  7. 07Leave DIABLo inserted while the non-drive request is required. Some vehicles may restore normal operation after removal or after an ignition cycle.
  8. 08If the expected response does not occur, do not rely on DIABLo. Apply alternative approved controls.
  9. 09At the end of the incident, remove DIABLo only when authorised and safe. Replace the end caps and return it to its protective bag.
  10. 10Inspect and periodically test the device on a suitable vehicle in a controlled, non-emergency environment.

SAFETY CRITICAL

Important limitations

  • Vehicle behaviour varies by manufacturer, model and software version.
  • DIABLo does not disconnect or de-energise the high-voltage battery.
  • DIABLo does not prove that the parking brake is applied.
  • A damaged charge port or disabled vehicle system may prevent the expected response.
  • Only trained, authorised personnel should deploy the device.
